Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a simple, painless, non-invasive, skin rejuvenation procedure using a combination of a fine abrasive tip or crystals & vacuum suction applied to the skin.

Often called ‘micro derm’ for short it exfoliates and gently removes old layers of the skin on the face to give it a fresher and cleaner appearance. There are no needles or anaesthetics involved and with very few side effects, microdermabrasion is a popular ‘lunchtime’ skincare treatment for people who would like a cost-effective way of obtaining smoother, cleaner looking skin, possibly to diminish spots, blackheads and very fine lines, but do not desire (or require) more invasive treatments.

FAQ's

Who can have Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion works on all skin types. It is used to treat ageing and sun damaged skin, some types of acne and acne scarring, altered pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, stretch marks and enlarged pores. Results may include improved skin tone, fewer break outs, diminished scars, even skin colour, refined skin pores, renewed elasticity and a healthy glow.

What happens before Microdermabrasion?

Prior to your first microdermabrasion treatment, a comprehensive medical history and skin analysis will be taken. The aims and objectives of treatment will be discussed and a personal treatment plan will then be prescribed. If it happens that microdermabrasion is not appropriate for you, it will be discussed during this session and an alternative treatment may be recommended instead.

What happens during Microdermabrasion?

The treatment usually takes 45 minutes. Having a microdermabrasion facial does not cause any pain or even discomfort. Patients have described the sensation of microdermabrasion like being licked by a cat. A wand that shoots very fine crystals and acts as a vacuum is passed in small sections over the face. Following your microdermabrasion skin care creams and a sunscreen will be applied.

What happens after Microdermabrasion?

Following microdermabrasion there may be minimal redness in the treated area for a few hours. You can leave the clinic a few minutes after your treatment and you can return to work and resume all activities immediately afterward.

The face should have a more youthful and fresh appearance  as a result of this treatment, with lines and wrinkles smoother and softer, and blemishes eased.

How often should I have Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion results are progressive. While improvement in skin texture and skin brightness may be observed after a single treatment, more marked improvements including reduction of hyperpigmentation, acne, and fine lines typically require a series of six treatments spaced 2-3 weeks apart.

To maintain results after the initial series treatments may be performed every 4-6 weeks.

Are there any side effects or complications?

Complications particular to microdermabrasion are few, but may include increased sun sensitivity, dryness of the skin and bruising, as well as redness that lasts a while longer than expected.

You may find that the treatment is not invasive enough to deal with the problems you would like to address, and will need further treatments or opt for a different procedure.

With very few side effects, microdermabrasion is a popular ‘lunchtime’ skincare treatment for people who would like a cost-effective way of obtaining smoother, cleaner looking skin, possibly to diminish spots, blackheads and very fine lines, but do not desire (or require) more invasive treatments.
